Economic Growth: USAID assistance focuses on support for small, mainly agricultural, enterprise and microfinance development. In the area of microfinance, USAID helps develop a network of savings and credit unions (WOCCU) and strength microfinance institutions. USAID also helps farmers manage irrigation networks in the regions of Djizak, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Namangan (Winrock International). To increase farmer incomes, vegetable and fruit producers in the Ferghana Valley and Samarkand are linked with markets. This assistance is also extended to businesses that are critical to the farm-to-market chain (Development Alternatives Initiatives). To improve the security and reliability of the regional power system, USAID helps upgrade the national energy planning and analysis system (USEA).
Investing in People: USAID provides technical assistance for the nationwide roll-out of activities related to high-quality primary health care, evidence-based medicine, and per-capita financing. Health providers are trained on facility supervision, clinical protocols, antenatal care, delivery management, and integrated management of childhood illnesses. Support is also provided for health promotion at the community level. USAID assists with implementation of the DOTS strategy for tuberculosis (TB) control, including electronic surveillance activities and improvement of TB laboratory work. Yet another initiative focuses on the development of treatment models for multi-drug resistant TB. The Government of Uzbekistan receives assistance in implementing an HIV grant from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria and in its efforts to combat avian influenza. HIV/AIDS-related activities include training for health professionals in counseling, testing, and treatment of the infection; as well as training for officials on the utilization of HIV surveillance data for programmatic and policy decision making. Key implementing partners: Abt Associates, John Snow Inc., KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, Project Hope, and Population Services International.
Governing Justly and Democratically: USAID supports the development of civil society (NDI), increased human rights protection(Eastern Kentucky University), anti-trafficking activities (IOM), and a variety of other activities. |
