Economic Growth: USAID assists Turkmenistan in the implementation of economic reforms to create the foundation for a competitive private sector and to stimulate investment in the country. Support for the Russian-language Certified International Professional Accountant program facilitates introduction of international accounting standards in the country. Funding for Junior Achievement programs helps offer economic education to secondary-school students, while training programs within the region and in the United States enhance understanding of the local professionals of private sector development, microfinance, and business education.  USAID also assists the development of Central Asian energy resources by promoting transparency, good governance, and integration with regional markets. Principal contractors and grantees: Deloitte Consulting LLP, Junior Achievement.

Investing in People: USAID works to establish and institutionalize components of health reform in Turkmenistan, with a focus on improving the quality of maternal and child health services and inflectional disease control and prevention. To improve children’s health, USAID helps update Medical Institute curriculum and train healthcare providers on the management of childhood illnesses. Programs also support the introduction and implementation of new internationally-recommended strategy for tuberculosis (TB) control, called DOTS, and treatment of multi-drug resistant forms of TB. USAID also supports capacity-building for responses to the potential threat from pandemic and avian influenza.  Principal contractors and grantees are: Abt Associates, WHO, and KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation.

Governing Justly and Democratically: USAID supports the development of civil society at the community level through training, technical assistance, and access to legal information.  This includes co-funding for small-scale community projects to meet local economic development needs, as well as assistance to strengthen community relationships with their local government.  USAID also works with local organizations to expand legal advice to NGOs, the media, and other organizations. In collaboration with the Supreme Council on Science and Technology of Turkmenistan, USAID trains educators and health practitioners in information and communication technology. Specialists from various sectors also receive training in the United States in their areas of expertise.  Principal contractors and grantees:  Counterpart, ABA/ROLI, International Center for Non-Profit Law, Internews, PACT, ACCELS, IREX, and World Learning.

The American people through USAID have provided nearly $80million in assistance for Turkmenistan since 1992.
