Awards Ceremony for the Winners of the Competition "The World Without Narcotics"

30 November 2006

AWARDS CEREMONY FOR THE WINNERS OF THE COMPETITION "THE WORLD WITHOUT NARCOTICS"

Dushanbe, Tajikistan:  On November 30, 2006, an awards ceremony was held in a State complex “Kohi Vahdat” for the winners of the competition “The World without Narcotics”. The competition was conducted under the aegis of the USAID-funded Drug Demand Reduction Program (DDRP) in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and the Ferghana Valley of Kyrgyzstan in partnership with Internews Tajikistan.

The goal of the competition is to promote development and active involvement of mass media in Tajikistan and increase professional skills of journalists from radio and TV companies in covering issues of drug abuse and information about living a healthy life.

The contest proved to be an important event, providing incentives for radio and TV companies to broadcast socially significant programs related to illegal narcotics.  This broadcast genre helps society as a whole and affected individuals to understand the problems associated with drug consumption and to consider solutions to this difficult problem.

TV journalists in their works touched upon related problems such as migration and spread of HIV in a modern Tajik society. All TV and radio companies in Tajikistan, individuals and organizations were eligible to participate in the competition. The informational materials, which were considered by the contest jury, were aired in electronic mass media from January 1 to August 1, 2006.  The jury considered 7 works under the category “TV Reporting”, 3 works under the category “TV Program”, and 19 works under the category “Radio PSA”.

After consideration of all submitted works, the jury took the following decision:

In the category “TV Reporting”: 1st place – TV Company “Sughd”; 2nd place – First Channel of Tajik National TV; 3rd place – TV and Radio Company “Asia”.
