USAID in Uzbekistan
USAID began providing assistance to Uzbekistan in 1993, soon after the country became independent. Since that time, the American people through USAID have provided over $300 million in programs that support development of a prosperous Uzbekistan. USAID programs cooperate with governmental organizations, businesses, and communities to create jobs, increase incomes, improve professional knowledge, and better manage available resources.
During the early years of assistance, USAID assisted the Government of Uzbekistan to restructure rural primary health care system and to make immunization more effective; improve water management and quality of basic education; and to reform the banking system, foreign exchange policy, fiscal analysis, and tax policy. More recently, USAID helped create credit unions and microfinance organizations to expand access to financing for small and medium-sized businesses. Currently, assistance focuses on improving private sector competitiveness and strengthening health sector in such areas as primary health care, mother and child health, and prevention and control of infectious diseases.
USAID operates under a bilateral agreement with the Government of Uzbekistan, and through the years has been one of the leading donor organizations in Uzbekistan. USAID programs in Uzbekistan are implemented through contracts and grants by approximately 20 local and international organizations, including U.N. agencies, for profit companies, and community organizations.
