Successful Return From the U.S. Of Tajikistan’s Fourth Community Connections Group — “Fruit and Vegetable Processing/Food Safety” from the Sughd Oblast

17 November 2006

Successful Return From the U.S. Of Tajikistan’s Fourth Community Connections Group — “Fruit and Vegetable Processing/Food Safety” from the Sughd Oblast

Ten participants of the Community Connections program “Fruit and Vegetable Processing/Food Safety” returned from 22 days in the United States on November 17, 2006. Participants were selected from the Sughd Oblast through an open competition based on their leadership potential within the field of food processing and safety. During their stay in the cities of Sacramento and Davis in the state of California, participants met with government representatives, farmers and employees of giant food processing factories They also visited the California Institute of Food and Agricultural Research, the Department of Food Science and Technology, the Department of Plant Sciences, the Western Human Nutrition Research Center, the Pacific Grain Company, the Western Institute for Food Safety and Security, the American Center for Wine, Food, Pro Safe Certification, the Bogel Winery, the California League of Food Processors, the California Association of Wine Grape Growers, Sun Valley Rice Processing, Raley’s Food Distribution Center, and many other organizations.

Fruit and vegetable processing in the Sughd region is still at a basic level, yet accounts for most domestic consumption. The aim of the program is to increase fruit and vegetable processing capacity in the Sughd region: improving quality and safety, reducing losses due to crop spoilage, and creating new opportunity for economic growth.

The Community Connections Program is made possible by the support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The USAID-funded Community Connections Program provides an important opportunity for citizens of the United States and Tajikistan to work together to address common professional challenges while expanding their social and cultural understanding. As business and professional communities of both countries rapidly become integrated, opportunities for positive relations between American people and the people of Tajikistan are increasingly important. The Community Connections Program offers community-based, three-to-five week practical trainings in the United States for business and professional organization leaders from Tajikistan.
