Environmental Protection Campaign

Environmental Protection Campaign

On October 31, 2006, the U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan, Ms. Tracey Ann Jacobson, and the Chairperson of the Hukumat of the Rudaki district, Mr. Khol Mashrabov, attended an environmental protection public campaign program entitled “How to avoid polluting canals” conducted with USAID support at school #64 in Chorteppa Jamoat, Rudaki district. The representatives of USAID Almaty and Dushanbe, Winrock International and members of the Water Users Associations (WUAs) also were present at the event.

This public awareness campaign was organized under the Water Users Associations Support Program (WUASP) implemented by Winrock International with U.S. government funding. The objective of this program is to support the effective use and distribution of irrigation water through the improved management of irrigation systems, the organization of associations for the collective use of the systems, and also to involve community members in the rational use of water.

During the publicity campaign the results of the schoolchildren’s drawing and essay writing contests devoted to water were presented, and winners from among the schoolchildren received prizes for the best drawings and essays. Following the prize presentation, the schoolchildren and the mobile theatre from the Shaartuz district demonstrated equitable and effective distribution of irrigation water and rational use of drinking water by performing short skits. The publicity campaign ended with visiting a small exhibition of schoolchildren’s work inside the school.
